「クライヴ・バーカー」
『クライヴ・バーカー』を初めて知ったのは「血の本」シリーズ。「ミッドナイト・ミート・トレイン」でいきなり衝撃を受けた。
今までのどんなホラー小説とも違う"新しいホラー小説家"だ！と夢中になった。そのグロテスクな面な描写を非難するむきもあるが、それは彼の小説の本質にとれば些細なことだ。
（「丘に、町が」がその良い例だ。）
彼へのコメントを紹介しておこう。

私は初期の「血の本」シリーズ(1984〜85)で多数のテーマに取り組み、なかには繰り返し登場するものがあった。変身、逆説、性差のあいまいさといったテーマである。

意外にも、「血の本」に関して、その残虐性に関することは、ほとんど述べてない。
更に彼はいう。
男にとって、女は恐怖の対象とも、欲望の対象ともなりうる。その美しさ、性的魅力に惹きつけられる一方で、自分たちが最も無防備なときに発揮される女たちの力が恐怖を生む。まさに逆説的だが、私は逆説を愛する。ホラー作品の多くは、人間という形態からの逸脱を脅威、または異常なこととして描くのだ。だが、ひとりの登場人物が人間という形態から逸脱するのではなく、たんなる逆転を起こす、たとえば男から女になるのだとしたらどうだろうか？

これらの発言は、「血の本」シリーズや「ヘルレイザー」シリーズの作者としては、不思議に感じる。
In 2003, Clive Barker received The Davidson/Valentini Award at the 15th Annual GLAAD Media Awards. This award is presented "to an openly lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender individual who has made a significant difference in promoting equal rights for any of those communities".
Barker lives in Los Angeles, California with his partner of 17 years, photographer David Emilian Armstrong and Armstrong's daughter Nicole from a previous relationship.

「血の本」から「ヘルレイザー」の監督、そして更に多方面に活躍の場を拡げている彼の現在のプロフィールは、こんなんだ。
As an author, painter, screenwriter, film director and producer, playwright, videogame designer and comic-book creator, the Liverpool-born Barker has aped his hero's versatility. Unlike Coward, he has never been embraced by the critics, choosing to work within the confines of genre: horror, fantasy, erotica. Hellraiser, the intricate S&M horror film that he wrote and directed in 1987, and Gods and Monsters, the film about the director James Whale that he executive-produced in 1988, are rare examples of his output to have won mainstream approval.
最近は、執筆活動にいそしんでいる彼だが、2009年には彼のプロデュースによる「ヘルレイザー」の予定もあるようで、楽しみだ。
